Patrick bit into an apple as he sat outside reading on the front porch of Hanover Tavern. He was holding the apple in his mouth and turning the page when he heard the clip-clop of an approaching horse. He looked up to see MizP heading his way. Liz had jumped off before they got within view. Patrick tucked the book under his arm and walked down the steps with a puzzled expression. MizP walked right up and stopped in front of Patrick, snorting a hello and sniffing the apple.
âMizP? What are you doing here?â Patrick wondered, looking around the horse for signs of Jack Poindexter.
âGet used tuh seeing me at your doorstep, Pahtrick,â MizP neighed.
âDid you run off?â Patrick asked, patting the horse on her cheek. âI better get you back home.â
MizP reached down for the apple and Patrick chuckled. âAlright, you can have the apple. Then Iâll take you back home.â
âThere you are!â came Jack Poindexterâs voice. He was riding Bill, who still licked his chops from the molasses smeared around his lips.
âHi, Mr. Poindexter! MizP just showed up here by herself. Did she get out of the gate?â Patrick asked.
âYes, MizP and this stump sucker Bill both got out,â Jack explained. âAlthough why she came here, I have no idea.â
âWell, here she is,â Patrick said, handing the reins to Jack.
âSorry for the trouble, Pat,â Jack said. âThanks for getting my filly.â
âNo trouble at all!â Patrick assured him. âAnd she just had an apple, so you know.â
âMaybe thatâs why she showed up at your doorstep,â Jack said with a chuckle. He noticed the book under Patrickâs arm and pointed. âWhat are you reading there?â
Patrick held up his book and smiled. âIâve decided to study law, Mr. Poindexter. Iâve been reading this winter and plan to go to Williamsburg for my law license this spring.â
Jack raised his eyebrows. âWell, I think youâve settled on a fine path, Pahtrick.â He leaned over with a grin. âHas the stop been worth it?â
Patrick nodded. âYes, sir. It has. Itâs helped me to figure things out.â
âGlad to hear it. Keep up the good work,â Jack said. âWeâll be going now. Thank you, Pahtrick.â
âThank you, and see you later, Mr. Poindexter,â Patrick called. âBye, MizP!â
âNot for long,â MizP whinnied.
Liz came walking by with her tail in the air and looked up at MizP. âBravo, mon amie. Weâll do this again in a couple of days, no?â
âLooking forward tuh it, Liz,â MizP answered with a wink.
